During next spring's parliamentary elections, Väyrynen will run in the district of Uusimaa instead of Lapland.
Väyrynen says that the country's largest constituency needs familiar candidates now that MPs Matti Vanhanen and Tanja Karpela have announced they will not stand in the upcoming elections.
Väyrynen ran from Lapland in the 2007 parliamentary elections. He told the newspaper that his move to Uusimaa could also help improve the Centre Party’s results in Lapland.
He added that he is interested in the position of foreign minister.
“If the Centre does well and I have a strong backing, I would hope to get the position of foreign minister.”
Väyrynen served as foreign minister for over ten years.
This isn't the first time Väyrynen has run from Uusimaa. The district has elected him to parliament three times before: in 1991, 1995 and 1999. In 1991, he won nearly 23,000 votes –the most of any candidate.
