Government Plans to Help Forest Owners after Storm

The Finnish government is planning to offer financial support to private forest owners following a devastating thunderstorm last week. According to early estimates, the storm felled about a million cubic metres of forest in eastern and central Finland.

The money could be used for projects including reforestation.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry plans to pay an average of 500 euros per hectare to private forest owners affected by the storm. Forest owners will be compensated from 10 to 35 percent for replanting expenses. The level of financial support will depend on the region.

Forest owners without insurance coverage were particularly devastated by the storm.

Forest industry giant UPM estimates that between one and two million cubic metres of trees were felled by the storm. The Finnish Forest Research Institute (Metla) and the Finnish Regional Forestry Network are to come up with a more precise estimate next week.

The areas of South Savo, Central Finland and Southwest Finland were most affected by the storm last Thursday night and Friday. However, many trees were felled in Central Ostrobothnia and North Savo as well.
