Parliament Moves to Tighten Gun Law

Parliament has approved the content of the new Firearms Act. The legal age for owning a hand gun could rise from 18 to 20.

If the law is passed, physicians would be required to inform authorities of individuals whom they consider unfit to own guns or ammunition. It would also require those under the age of 18 to get a separate permit to be able to use hunting weapons.

The opposition Left Alliance wanted to allow those aged 15 and over to use hunting guns without such a licence, but this amendment was voted down.

Parliament has yet to vote on whether to pass or reject the law.
