Finland Closes for All Saints' Day

Most shops in Finland are closed on Saturday for All Saints' Day. However, stores will again open their doors on Sunday. Travellers should also be prepared for changes in public transport timetables.

State-run Alko alcohol retail stores and post offices will also close for the holiday. Some kiosks and gas station convenience stores may, however, be open on Saturday.

On All Saints' Day, long-distance trains will run on regular Saturday schedules; however, seven train routes are cancelled. Local trains and Matkahuolto buses operate on Sunday timetables.

All Saints' Day is a western Christian remembrance day for passed loved ones. Many Finnish families visit the graves of family members on this day. The custom of decorating headstones with candles and flowers on All Saints' Day emerged after the Second World War.

All Saints' Day is the fifth most popular day for Finns to attend religious services.
