Strong Recovery in Transit Deliveries to Russia

The value and volume of goods being transported to Russia via Finland are growing briskly, Finnish customs officials said on Monday.

The figures are up by more a third since last year. However they are still far short of the peak seen about two years ago.

In the third quarter, deliveries of cars and vans as well as various types of machines and equipment nearly doubled from a year earlier.

Food shipments rose by more than one fifth.

"There has been strong growth in deliveries of drinks, sugar, cocoa, chocolate and sweets," says Customs Inspector Eija Pohjansaari.

Meanwhile transit deliveries of grains, textiles and footwear have all declined since 2009.

Since last year, the value of items sent to Russia through Finland grew by more than one third to nearly 4.5 billion euros.

The biggest increases in transit deliveries were seen at the Imatra and Nuijamaa border crossing points in south-east Finland. Last year some 90,000 lorries headed east over Finland's border.
