Most major arteries in and out of the city saw accidents during the day and for a while during the morning, tram services in the city came to halt when a truck-mounted crane brought down electric lines.
Traffic on the highway heading north out of Helsinki towards Lahti was backed up following the closure of one lane due to an accident at about 10:30 am. The lines of cars did not start flowing again into well into the afternoon.
Accidents also slowed traffic on the main highway between Helsinki and Turku, and a car-truck collision on the highway to Porvoo brought traffic to a crawl.
Problems are expected to continue over the weekend with heavy snowfall forecasted for Saturday.
