Officials Seek to Crack Open Data Protection Laws to Fight Grey Economy

Labour protection officials are looking into new weapons to help combat the grey economy. Officials may soon have access to confidential information from the tax authorities and pension institutions, reports Turun Sanomat.

Officials working with uncovering undeclared work say strict data protection laws currently hamper their investigations.

The Confederation of Finnish Industries opposes the move, whereas the Federation of Finnish Enterprises and the Central Organisation of Finnish Trade Unions welcome broadened liberties for investigators.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health says the new law should be passed into effect as soon as possible.
