Finland's Saima-ringed seal is on the verge of extinction. The state-run nature administrator Metsähallitus estimates that the current population is just 260.

Kit Kovacs of the International Union for Conservation of Nature told the Finnish nature journal Suomen Luonto that the seal population is small and fragmented. Excessive fishing is responsible for high mortality levels, while milder winters have weakened population growth.

Of the world's seal species, only the Hawaiian monk seal and Mediterranean monk seal are as endangered as the Finnish Saima-ringed seal.
