Rain Causing Problems

Unseasonably warm weather and continuing rains have damaged unpaved roads and increased the risk of flooding.

The surfaces of unpaved gravel roads, especially in southern and south-eastern parts of the country have turned to mud after early November snows melted and have been followed by rains. In some areas warnings have gone up to drivers of poor road conditions and vehicle weight restrictions have been imposed.

In some places the rains have affected electrical devices, for example shorting out traffic lights.

The national Environmental Centre is keeping a close watch on water levels in rivers, some of which may begin overflowing their banks within the next few days if present weather conditions continue.

Fish deaths

Large numbers of dead fish are being found in the lower reaches of the Siikajoki river in west-central Finland. The deaths are being attributed to an unusually high level of acidity.

Following an exceptionally dry summer, runoff from the rains has carried large amounts of natural acidic materials into the river. Officials say there is no quick fix to being ph-levels back to normal.
