The average floor space in new homes built last year was around 200 square metres. In recent years, the height of ceilings has increased, as the surface area of windows.
Experts say that in terms of energy use, it is not a sustainable trend. According to Jukka Jaakkola of PRKK, an association focused on the development of home construction, many houses now being built contain wasted space that does little but eat up extra heating. Something, he says, that will be reflected in higher expenditure on energy by owners.
In addition, increasingly popular designs incorporating large windows also slash energy efficiency. The insulation provided by windows which meet current construction regulations are six times less efficient at keep warmth in and the cold out than are the walls which surround them.
Researchers say that a number of factors have led to the trend towards bigger houses. The economy is strong and many people have more to spend on houses. Home builder fairs spotlight many big model homes. Local authorities have made it easier to gain construction permits for larger houses on smaller lots. And, the terms of home loans are easy.
