Sofya Golyak Dazzles at the Maj Lind Piano Competition

Sofya Gulyak from Russia played her way to the winning position in the second edition of the Helsinki International Maj Lind Piano Competition on Thursday evening.

Finland's Roope Gröndahl and Marko Mustonen placed second and fourth respectively. Another Russian, Violetta Khachikian was took the third position. In fifth place was Yoonjung Han from South Korea, while Estonia's Irina Zahharenkova placed sixth in the competition.

Thursday evening's final also featured the Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Leif Segerstam.

The six finalists shared a collective purse of 57,000 euros. In the end it was Gulyak's stellar performance that took the top prize of 20,000 euros. She also received a special award donated by the Taneli Kuusisto Fund for the best performance of a Finnish piano piece for her rendition of Joonas Phjonen's "Bagatelles".

Special prizes of 1,000 euros were also awarded to Sonja Fräki for her performance of the Piano Sonata by Kalevi Aho and to Maija Väisänen for her performance of Einojuhani Rautavaara’s Piano Sonata no. 2, "The Fire Sermon".
