Many new drivers do not take passing the test for granted.
The basis for gaining driver's licenses is the same throughout the country. However, regional differences are stark when it comes to students passing their driving tests. When only 15% of women and 19% of men fail their driving tests in central Finland, 40% of women and 30% of men flunk in southern parts of the country.
Different conclusions have been drawn as to the reasons for these discrepancies.
Some say it has to do with the difficulty of the driving environment, while others believe it is related to poor self-esteem, and unfamiliarity with operating cars.
Nationwide, women fail their first driving test attempts more often than men. However, instructors say there is no prevailing bias against women.
Overall, the demands on driving tests are tightening, and both male and female failure rates are up since last year.
Some hope for an increase in the number of driving lessons to help better prepare young drivers. More practical training would also mean a smaller probability of accidents for this risk group.
