Study Links Low Birth Weight and Snoring

Premature infants with very low birth weight are more than twice as likely to suffer from sleep-disordered breathing as young adults, according to a study by doctors at the University of Helsinki and the National Public Health Institute.

The study also found that maternal smoking during pregnancy increases the risk of sleep-disordered breathing by more than twofold.

Headed by Dr. E. Juulia Paavonen, the study was published in the October issue of Pediatrics, the journal of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The study tracked of 158 young adults who had been born with a weight of less than 1.5 kg and 169 full-term control subjects. At the time of the study they were between the ages 18 and 27.
