The project also investigated the prevalence and nature of the violence rescue workers encounter.
Over 70 percent of respondents in the "Work Safety 2007" poll said they had come into contact with violence during their careers. Furthermore, over 60 percent said they had been confronted with physical violence during the period spanning from 2005 to 2006.
Drug and narcotic abuse was named as the main underlying reason for violent behaviour among people.
Over 530 rescue professionals responded to the poll.
The collaborative project has moreover worked with the technical unit of the police to develop protective wear for rescue workers to outfit in threatening situations. Trial use of this gear will continue in the coming months.
