About one-in-six couples are unable to have a child after trying to conceive for one or two years. Two-thirds of couples experiencing infertility -- or around 3,000 a year -- end up seeking fertility treatment. Approximately three percent of the children in Finland are conceived following fertility treatments.
Infertility can be caused by several factors. One-quarter of the problems are due to the woman, one-quarter due to the man, and one-quarter are caused by both partners. Unexplainable infertility accounts for the rest of the cases.
The success of fertility treatments is due to a variety of reasons such as the woman's age, the reason for infertility and the couple's lifestyle. Several types of treatment are available, depending on patients' needs
"Some people can become pregnant following the first treatment. Many however have to undergo several treatments, which can take years," said Sirpa Eviä, a doctor at the Family Federation's Fertility Clinics.
