Centre Party Secretary Calls for Cuts in Food Tax

Centre Party Secretary Jarmo Korhonen wants the government to move up plans to cut taxes on food. He feels that inflation and the global food crisis have put a serious dent in consumer's purchasing power.

Korhonen said in a Mayday speech on Thursday morning that inflation has eaten away at any increases that have been made to social benefits. This means that poor families are having an even harder time making ends meet, now that the global food crisis has also pushed food prices up.

He wants cuts on food tax to be implemented next January, earlier than the government had been planning. He says this should be a higher priority than cutting income tax.
