Rents on the Rise

The rise in rents for apartments is accelerating. During the first three months of this year, rents rose on average 3.9% since the same period last year. Rents for social housing have risen more steeply than for those on the open market. For example, in the metropolitan Helsinki area, rents for social housing rose by 5.5% compared to 4.2% on the free market, according to figures released by Statistics Finland. The monthly rate for an apartment in the capital area stood, on average, at 12.40 euros per square metre at the beginning of the year. Elsewhere, the average figure was 9.56 euros per square metre. Many apartments rented from insurance institutions in Finland are subject to an annual index rate, which tends to be around 3%. YLE
