Two Fatal Crashes; Midsummer Traffic Mostly Calm

Midsummer Eve road accidents caused two fatalities. Traffic on Friday was mostly smooth as many cottage-goers already took to the roads on Thursday. A passenger car en route to Turku crashed into a van early on Friday near Ämmässuo in Espoo. The impact caused the passenger car to swerve into the road railing, after which it flipped over and fell into a ditch. The passenger car's driver died in the accident. Later on Friday, a truck and passenger car collided head-on in Haukipudas near Oulu. The passenger car's driver died whereas the truck's driver was hospitalised. No major traffic congestions have been reported on Friday. Most travellers seem to have hit the roads on Thursday, according to the Finnish Road Administration. Partying Began Early

Police and rescue workers reported that Thursday night was similar to any other summer weekend. The bulk of their work has been alcohol-related since the festivities began on Thursday evening.

With many city dwellers celebrating in the countryside, the capital city's streets are reportedly calmer than usual.
