DNA Database Cracks Crime

The national DNA database now boasts some 61,000 samples from crime suspects and convicts, according to the newspaper Aamulehti.

The number of samples obtained has increased ten-fold in five years.

Police say the database has been extremely useful. They add they're disappointed that DNA samples cannot always be taken. Last year, over 1,300 crimes were solved with the help of the DNA database. Fewer than 350 were solved with the fingerprint registry, which is much more extensive than the DNA database.

The National Bureau of Investigation says police are more interested in obtaining samples due to their usefulness in solving crimes. The law is also flexible enough to allow for obtaining samples. For the past several years, DNA samples have been taken from those accused of relatively minor crimes.
