Border Traffic Slows Following Tighter Customs Controls

Russian customs officials in Svetogorsk are calling for additional insurance and security escorts for vehicles carrying cargo valued at more than 50,000 dollars. The new customs rules are increasing congestion at the Finnish-Russian border.

The new requirements have caused custom clearance delays, particularly for car transport trucks, and at times have increased truck queues at Imatra, on the Finnish side of the border.

Finnish customs official Timo Taipale says a similar rule is also in place at the Russian side of the Nuijamaa border control. Finnish Customs says it hopes general cargo transport travelling to Russia will be steered through the Vaalimaa checkpoint to distribute the traffic.

Danger Driving on Main Road 6 Police say the long line of parked trucks on Main Road 6 pose an extremely dangerous situation in Imatra and Lappeenranta. Officers are urging drivers to use the left lane to bypass truck queues. This should improve safety for truck drivers and police directing traffic. Drivers are also being told to lower their speeds and are not allowed to pass on the right. One accident and several near-accidents have been reported on Main Road 6 at the site of parked trucks. YLE
