Mobile Broadband Spreading Like Wildfire

There is roughly one broadband internet connection per three people in Finland, and the number is growing quickly -- largely because of an explosion of high-speed mobile link-ups.

According to the Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority (FICORA), the biggest growth has been in mobile high-speed connections, which have more than doubled since the start of this year. There are now more than 300,000 mobile broadband connections in the country, and nearly two million overall.

As of late June, more than half of all fixed broadband connections had speeds of less than two megabytes per second. About six percent were super-fast linkups of more than 10 megabytes a second.

The biggest broadband operator remains Elisa, which controls more than a third of the market. The Swedish-Finnish operator TeliaSonera holds a market share of 29 percent, while DNA edged up to 14 percent, with Finnet losing ground at 13 percent.
