The Finnish Tax Administration is refunding between 50 and 60 million euros in car taxes that were ruled illegal by the Court of Justice of the European Communities.

The ruling affects an estimated 60,000 vehicles which were imported by private individuals between 2006 and 2009. The average refund is around 900 euros. The money will be refunded into consumers' accounts in December.

The European Commission took Finland to court over how it calculated the taxes, saying that the taxes were inordinate and intended to discourage purchases from other EU countries. Finland denied this.

In November, the Court ruled in favour of the European Commission and ordered Finland to refund the taxes.
