EK calculates that Finland will need up to 8,000 megawatts more generating capacity by 2030, in addition to projects that are currently under construction. The organization is calling on the government to authorise the construction of three new commercial nuclear reactors.

Calculations by EK, and Finnish energy industries (ET) predict that demand for energy will be about 20 percent higher in 2030 than it was before the current slump set in.

The estimate is for a 40 percent increase in electricity consumption in the service sector, and extensive growth in the use of electricity in transport, when electric cars and hybrids become more common.

The study also predicts that industry will continue to need more energy, in spite of structural change.
