Electricity consumption is expected to be around 91 TWh. by 2020. This year’s consumption is around 80 TWh.
Despite the slowdown in consumption, the Ministry says Finland still needs additional generation capacity. The calculation does not include a possible replacement or a shutdown of existing nuclear power plants.
Operational permits for the Loviisa nuclear power station conclude by the end of the 2020’s. Calculations for a reduction in consumption assume their continuation or replacement by other low emission generation capacity.
Ministerial calculations call for two additional reactors. However, Minister for Economic Affairs, Mauri Pekkarinen reiterated on Tuesday, a licence for only one reactor would be granted.
The Ministry adds Finland does not appear to be able to meet its set target for renewable energy of 38 percent of all consumption by the year 2020.
