European Affairs Minister Alexander Stubb says he’s certain that the European Commission and euro member states have a backup plan in the event that Greece exits the eurozone.
Speaking on Yle’s Ykkösaamu television discussion programme, Stubb said that different member states and institutions would have different plans.
He’s said it’s likely that Greece will not remain in the euro, if voters favour anti-austerity parties in the June parliamentary elections.
Meanwhile Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja would assign responsibility for a Greek euro exit to the Greek people themselves. He admits that the situation would be difficult because there is no defined mode of operation for a country to exit the monetary union.
As such, he told Yle that it would be a relief if the EU Commission did have a backup plan. Tuomioja added that at this stage the best option for Greece would be further debt restructuring.
