STUK: Welding Work at Olkiluoto up to Standard

The Radiation Safety Centre's (STUK) inspection of the Olkiluoto nuclear construction site has found that the site's welding work is up to par. Inspectors did criticise the worksite for failing to adhere to the highest standards on less crucial welding work. STUK, however, says the uncovered welding faults do not weaken the soundness of standing structures. The inspection was conducted in order to check whether safety procedures at the site of Finland's fifth commercial reactor were being followed. A recent YLE television current-affairs programme claimed that employees had been doing welding work without proper instruction and that they were forbidden from speaking with anyone about the issue. Finnish Greenpeace says it's dissatisfied with the scope of STUK's findings. The organisation is demanding that an inspection be performed by an international, neutral party.
