More Men than Ever Seeking Help for Violent Behaviour

The number of men seeking help for their own violent behaviour at home has doubled in the past decade.

The report was released by the Federation of Mother and Child Homes and Shelters. They say that two thirds of the men seeking help have already used physical violence against their spouses. Many of them are between the ages of 30 and 34.

"A lot of things have happened to men in their early 30s. They've had a relationship, formed a family, had children, and their daily life isn't a rosy as it used to be," explains Jussi Pulli, the Federation's development director.

"And that could be one clear factor why things get out of control and violence becomes a method to solve problems. It's an extreme method; you should always try to solve problems by talking about them."

Pulli says it's important for men to recognise the early signs of violent behaviour and seek help in time.

Some 500 men seek help from the Federation every year. Seventy percent come to them voluntarily, but usually only once the family is on the brink of splitting up.
