A programme of reforms is intended to enhance operations by updating and streamlining the directives for evaluating the need and urgency of assistance required by individuals. It will also increase training for on-duty staff at emergency centres and develop staffers’ ability to evaluate the state of substance abusers.

The shortage of emergency service workers in the capital city region will be relieved from next year by introducing courses for 24 trainee emergency workers.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Health feels that the programme of reforms has improved preparedness for hospital transport across the country. Ministry officials consider that insufficient attention ahs been paid to coordination between other emergency service operations and other official health services.

The report on the status of the country’s emergency services was commissioned by Chancellor of Justice Jaakko Jonkka, who called for a re-evaluation of the performance of the network of services. Jonkka expressed particular concern about standard operational directives for emergency centres.
