On Wednesday afternoon, there was a heavy electrical storm in North Pirkanmaa near Tampere. The Finnish Meteorological Institute (FMI) says the area has a 40 percent chance of downbursts -- strong downdrafts that create potentially dangerous winds on or near the ground. Such phenomena caused much of the damage during storms in central and eastern Finland late last week. They can also be dangerous to aircraft and boats.

The FMI recorded winds of 14 metres a second at Näsijärvi in Tampere, but says that there may be gusts of much higher than that.

Motorists are warned of potentially heavy hailstorms, which may cause sudden slipperiness and loss of visibility.

A thunderstorm north of Tampere was reported to be moving northward at about 50 kilometres an hour, while another storm was pounding Kainuu in the east.

Meanwhile in Helsinki, the FMI says the relative humidity was around 77 percent, a near-tropical level which is unusual in Finland.

The FMI has issued warnings of heavy rain and thundersqualls in many areas and strong gusty winds at sea and on inland waters, with severe gale-force winds of 21 metres per second on the Bay of Bothnia.
