Thousands await vehicle tax demand notices

More than 30,000 motorists did not receive their vehicle tax demand notices due in June. Police say they will not fine car owners who didn't pay the tax because they never received a bill.

Thousands of cars have been banned from roads due to an error on the part of the Finnish Transport Safety Agency, Trafi. A printing error meant that over 30,000 vehicle tax demand notices, due to be paid in June, were not sent out.

Cars with unpaid tax are prohibited from the roads. Trafi has notified transport authorities and police about the issue and has promised to lift prohibitions from affected vehicle owners.

Traffic police, for their part, will not penalize the motorists. Jussi Pohjonen, press officer at the National Traffic Police, said it will be sufficient that people pay the tax once they receive the notice in the mail.
