A convicted murderer was captured 10 days after escaping from a maximum-security prison near Iisalmi, central Finland.

Acting on a tipoff from a civilian, police found Pekka Luukkonen in a car near Salo, south-west Finland. He was captured without putting up resistance.

Luukkonen, 33, was serving a life term on a number of charges, including the murder of his former mother-in-law in his hometown of Kuusamo. The judge described the crime, which was carried out despite a restraining order, as extremely cruel and premeditated. Police had warned the public not to approach the escapee, saying he could behave unpredictably.

He escaped from Sukeva Prison on July 14 in the classic style: by sawing through the bars of his cell and sliding down on a sheet in the middle of the night. He had a six-hour head start before wardens noticed his absence.

This was the first escape from a closed prison in Finland this year. There was one such escape last year.

Sukeva is located in North Savo, some 50km north of Iisalmi.

Also on Monday afternoon, police caught another dangerous escapee in Tampere. The man, who had been convicted of violent crimes, was being treated at Niuvanniemi Hospital, a forensic psychiatric institute in the eastern city of Kuopio.

He was found about six hours after escaping during outdoor exercise that morning. Authorities had expected him to head toward his home area in south-western Finland.

As in the Sukeva case, police had asked the public for tips but warned that the escapee was dangerous and should not be approached.

The 35-year-old was described as having a blonde crew cut, tattoos, scars and a black leather jacket.
