Ministry suggests foreign student cut at Saimaa University

The Ministry of Education has suggested reducing the number of foreign students admitted to the Saimaa University of Applied Sciences by one hundred. The move would primarily affect an English-language programme in chemical engineering.

The school reacted by proposing a reduction in the number of foreign student from the current level of 380 to 300.

Earlier on Wednesday, Yle News reported that the university was particularly popular among Russian students.

Principal Anneli Pirttilä says good employment prospects for Russian speaking students exist in the area. But she says other nationalities offer little benefit to Finnish society.

"Integration of students is of the essence. Only then can the training given here be of benefit to Finnish society," noted Pirttilä.

She also said that tuition fees could be used to encourage foreign students to put down roots in Finland.

"Charging tuition from students coming from outside the EU would guarantee that they really are interested in studying in Finland," explained Pirttilä.
