The Security and Defence 2012 exhibition in Lahti, that runs through Saturday, has well over 100 exhibitors who are professionals in the safety and security.
The sector is a growth field in Finland.
"The private and corporate security side alone has been expanding by 10% annually over the past few years. We are talking about hundreds of millions of euros in revenues," says Heikki Norell, a security expert for the security and risk management information service company T&RH.
Jussi Lehtonen, sales director for Kaso Oy, a company whose line includes safes and security doors, also sees expanding markets.
”Companies are, of course, the most significant group of buyers, but we expect that the importance of private households will be greater in the future."
According to Heikki Norell, greater demand for security services and technologies is a reflection of many people's general feeling of insecurity. This is in part a result of worries about the resources available to police, in part it may be fed by high-profile crime reporting in the press, but the main reasons run deeper.
"Along with urbanization, the sense of community has declined. People do not necessarily have a friend or family member for security, and they don't know their neighbours," Nordell points out.
