Record year for Finnish film

2012 was a good year for Finnish movies, with domestic productions drawing record audiences.

Finnish films attracted 2.4 million visits—up from the last record of 2.1 million in 2010—according to the Finnish Film Foundation.

Family film Risto Räppääjä ja viileä Venla, also known as Ricky Rapper and Cool Wendy, was the most-watched Finnish movie of the year with 310,000 people seeing it on the big screen. The movie is based on a series of children’s books.

Mika Kaurismäki’s father-son road trip Tie pohjoiseen (Road North) came in second with 260,000 viewers.

In third place at the Box Office was Puhdistus (Purge) based on Sofi Oksanen’s best-selling novel and directed by Antti J.Jokinen, known for his career in music videos. The Estonian wartime drama attracted 210,000 cinema-goers.
