Construction standards in decline

More than one third of organisations ordering construction work believe that build quality is deteriorating, according to a survey by Yle.

More than 30 housing providers took part in the survey, including large corporate housing investor Sato and property management firm VVO, alongside public housing residents and housing associations.

Declining quality was put down to issues of poor humidity control, ultra competitive 'economy of scale' contracts and a deteriorating work ethic.

Mould poses a large problem for homes, especially in older buildings, yet hopes that new housing would solve the problem are proving misplaced. The survey brought to light myriad complaints claiming that all sorts of new constructions were being detrimentally affected by high levels of humidity.

Construction organisations are demanding that building companies should be held more accountable for errors in workmanship. While tightening standards would come with a price tag, they claim that it would save in costs later down the track.
