Long, sunny but cold days herald Finnish spring

Sunny, clear but cold weather is in prospect for most of the country. The high pressure front heralds excellent skiing conditions for practitioners of Finland’s traditional winter sport.

Yle meteorologist Kerttu Kotakorpi says that many parts of the country can expect a lot of sunshine over the weekend, with only a few places suffering from snowfall. Where it does arrive, that snowfall could be heavy enough to hamper visibility.

Temperatures are expected to be between -15 and -10 degrees Celsius during the day, with nighttime lows of around -10 degrees.

Similar conditions are expected to continue into next week, offering good opportunities for winter sports as the days get longer. The sunny weather stands in stark contrast to a winter that was one of the cloudiest in recent memory.

Finland is currently seeing around 11 hours of daylight, lengthening by around half an hour per week in the south. In the north, people can expect an additional hour of sunshine per day with each passing week.
