Spring finally on the way?

Although winter has lasted longer than usual in Finland this year, there may be light at the end of the tunnel. Meteorologists forecast that thermal spring could finally arrive this weekend.

That means average temperatures could edge above freezing point. At present very cold nights are keeping the average below zero. Forecasters are optimistic.

”The sun is getting higher all the time, and it’s warming effect is constantly increasing,” says Yle meteorologist Seija Paasonen.

Spring usually arrives in the last week of March, so it is already a couple of weeks late. In northern regions, the wait will continue even after the weekend.

Paasonen says that there will be sunshine and scattered showers during Monday, with drier and sunnier conditions to follow later in the week.
