Russians unwittingly importing illegal rubber bullet guns

Finnish border authorities are reporting almost weekly findings of rubber bullet firearms in vehicles crossing the border from Russia into Finland. Many Russian visitors are unaware that the weapons - primarily used for self-defence – are illegal in Finland.

Lieutenant Ossi Fonselius of the southeast Finland border guards said that the weapons are usually in plain sight in vehicles as their owners are not aware that the weapons violate Finnish regulations.

In Finland the possession of the rubber bullet weapons constitutes a firearms felony, which is punishable by a fine and confiscation of the weapon by the state.

This year the southeast Finland border guard station has already relieved owners of dozens of firearms. Southeast border authorities have also confiscated a similar number of illegal stun weapons and telescopic bars.

Rubber bullets are not lethal, but can cause serious damage, particularly if they strike near the eyes.
