Police used tear gas against disruptive Polish fans following a UEFA Europa League football match in Vantaa on Thursday evening. The Polish side Lech Poznań defeated Espoo team FC Honka, 3-1.
Police say the situation began when Polish football fans began to throw stones at security guards after the match.
Police detained two Polish supporters, whereupon others began to attack the officers in an effort to free the two. They then used tear gas to calm the situation. The incident lasted about half an hour before the visiting fans agreed to board their busses. The busses headed to a ferry that left Helsinki late in the evening. The detained players were escorted to the ship.
The game was part of second qualifying round for the 2013/2014 Europa League, the secondary club tournament formerly known as the UEFA Cup.
In the match was played at Myyrmäki Stadium, Honka’s only goal came from team captain Jussi Vasara in the 17th minute. Poznań's Finnish player Kasper Hämäläinen did not score.
The two sides meet again next Thursday.
Honka is ranked 282nd in the UEFA Club Ranking, which is led by Barcelona.
