Air traffic controllers may begin strike in mid-August

The government has ordered a two-week postponement before a potential walkout by air traffic controllers can begin.

Talks aimed at fending off a threatened job action by air traffic controllers ended without result on Thursday.

State labour mediator Leo Suomaa hosted four hours of fruitless talks between the Service Sector Employers group PALTA and the air traffic controllers' union.

They have been working without a contract since mid-May, and had been threatening to begin refusing to work some shifts beginning on Tuesday.

August 13 walkout?

They are demanding that the civil aviation authority Finavia cancel plans to close the Tampere area traffic control management unit.

The Ministry of Employment and the Economy has pushed back the start date of a possible walkout from July 30 to August 13.

The next talks are scheduled for August 5.
