FinMin drops deportee detention centre budget

The Ministry of the Interior's plan to set up a new deportee detention centre in Joutseno has been shown the door by the Ministry of Finance. The proposed detention centre had been designed to expedite the processing of foreigners being held for deportation.

At present foreigners who are to be deported from Finnish shores are from time to time held in police custody before being taken from the country.

"Our hoped for additional places were not supported in the Finance Ministry’s budget,” said Ministry of the Interior State Secretary Marjo Anttora.

The Ministry of the Interior stated that it had hoped to set up a new 30-bed detention centre at Konnunsuo.
