Spying not a problem for Finnish telecoms

Finnish telecommunications operators say that international intelligence gathering has not affected the security of their services. According to the Communications Regulatory Authority, Finnish operators turn over user information only within the letter of Finnish law.

The Finnish Communications Regulatory Authority FICORA surveyed 55 Finnish telecoms and 7 of their international partners. Over a third of the Finnish companies manage all of their communications services within Finland, and so apply only the terms of Finnish communications legislation.

The remainder provide services in Finland that are partially or wholly operated outside the country. Finnish telecoms are obligated to ensure the security of communications by their users regardless of where those operations are actually carried out. The same applies to foreign-based services they may sell to their customers in Finland.

FICORA is to open talks with telecom operators later this year about the security of international services.
