Pertti Torstila new head of Finnish Red Cross

Long time Foreign Ministry official Pertti Torstila has been chosen as the new head of the Finnish wing of humanitarian aid NGO the Red Cross. The Red Cross made the announcement at its annual general meeting in Turku on Sunday.

Torstila, aged 68, has enjoyed a long career in the service of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and will come out of retirement in order to take up the post.

Amongst other offices, he has previously worked for the Foreign Ministry as State Secretary and as an ambassador in Sweden, Hungary and Croatia.

The Red Cross said that Torstila has a history of many years of cooperation with the organisation. He is a member of the Hämeenlinna branch of the Finnish Red Cross.
