Frozen blueberries recalled over petrol smell, exhaust flavour

The Finnish Food Safety Authority Evira has announced the recall of packaged frozen blueberries from food retail outlets over health concerns. The company packaging the berries said the odd smell and taste is only present in a small amount of its product: between one and 10 kilograms of berries.

According to the Finnish food watchdog Evira, 200-gram packets of blueberries sold under the “Pakkasmarja” brand have been pulled off store shelves after having been found to smell of exhaust fumes and taste of petrol.

The suspicious batch of berries has a "use by" date of November 2, 2015 and has been sold in S-Group outlets as well as Siwa and Valintatalo neighbourhood grocery stores since May.

Evira senior inspector Raija Törmä-Oksanen said the Authority has not yet determined whether or not the product poses a health risk.

The company packaging the berries, Pakkasmarja said that the odd smell and flavour only appear to have affected a small batch of products: between one and 10 kilograms of blueberries.

Consumers can return empty berry packets to Pakkasmarja Ltd, Lintikonkatu 20, 77600, Suonenjoki.
