Party Secretary Minna Arve from the NCP says that the party leaders have been informed of last week’s murder in Laajasalo, Helsinki and of the murder suspect’s affiliation with their party’s Youth League. Arve says that the party is still dependent on media news sources.

The executive director of the NCP Youth League’s Helsinki branch has confessed to killing the woman of foreign origin found dead in the sea near Laajasalo last Sunday. Police are investigating the killing as a murder due to the brutality and cruelty of the crime.

“We are all deeply shocked at this personal tragedy, and express our deepest condolences to the family of the deceased,” Arve told Yle on Saturday.

According to the police report, the victim was first assaulted by the suspect in front of the apartment building where they both lived. The man then allegedly transported the woman by car to the seafront, where he continued his assault until dragging the woman into the sea.

In response to questions of the gruesome incident potentially leading to backlash against the party, Arve said that the NCP may take the matter into internal consideration but that they are in no way party to any of the events.

Prime Minister Alexander Stubb has so far declined to comment on the murder; Arve said she would be speaking for the party until further notice.
