Three people lost their lives in traffic accidents and one person was seriously injured on Saturday. Several people suffered milder injuries, and many vehicles swerved off the roads in Northern Ostrobothnia, where driving conditions were icy and slippery.
In northern Ostrobothnia’s Pudasjärvi two men were killed after their car went off the road on Saturday evening. The police say the road surface was icy and snowy at the site of the fatal crash.
One person in died in a head-on collision with a truck. Rescue services managed to free the truck driver from his mangled vehicle.
In Haapajärvi, again in northern Ostrobothnia, a 30-year-old woman was seriously injured when her car sped off the icy and extremely slippery road.
Similar conditions prevailed in Haapavesi in the same region, where a truck transporting peat drove off the road. The driver was taken to hospital for a check-up.
A car was badly damaged in another northern Ostrobothnia accident, after it swerved off the road in Kiiminki. The three passengers, however, escaped without serious injuries.
Sleet and snowfall made for abysmal driving conditions especially in Ostrobothnia, northern Ostrobothnia and the north-eastern region of Kainuu on Saturday evening. Similar weather conditions are expected also in northern Savo and northern Karelia on Sunday.
