Utsjoki breaks cold record – twice

Near the top of Finland in Lapland, Utsjoki broke the record for the winter's coldest temperature on Saturday with a reading of -37.3 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, it broke its own record when the Finnish Meteorological Institute recorded a temperature of -39.6 degrees Celsius in the same northern municipality.

This winter’s record for the coldest temperatures in Finland has been broken in Utsjoki -- twice. According to the Finnish Meterological Institute, -39.6 degrees Celsius temperatures were recorded on Sunday evening. The previous record was set a day earlier on Saturday when the mercury dipped to -37.3 in Utsjoki.

On Sunday evening temperatures of -39.6 were recorded at Inari Airport and Kaamanen.

Northern Lapland remains in the grip of a cold snap: on Monday morning at 6 am the average temperature was -39 degrees Celsius.
