Bitter cold in north and east, some weekend warming in store

There is wide variation in temperatures in the country, with the coldest readings of -30C or more reported in eastern areas, Kainuu and western Lapland.

A high pressure front is likely to remain stationary over Finland on Wednesday which means continuing cold temperatures in areas with clear skies. Cloud cover and warmer temperatures will continue to dominate the weather along the southern and western coasts, as well as in North Ostrobothnia. There is chance of some snow flurries in these areas.

Lapland is seeing temperatures as low as -35C, while the thermometer in parts of the south is hovering around -10C. The lowest early Wednesday morning temperature registered was -34.9C at Muonio in north-west Lapland.

The forecast for Thursday is for increasingly cloudy skies and some light scattered snow showers in the south-west.

On Friday, snowfall is expected to spread across southern and central regions and into the north. Along with fresh snow, temperatures will rise. Thursday temperatures in eastern areas and Lapland are expected to range between -20C and -30C. On Friday, temperatures will be up, with the coldest readings, -20C, expected only in the far north of Lapland.
