Sunny for now—but winter’s last blast set for weekend

Finland is set for a sunny week, with high pressure dominant and blue skies for the whole country. After that there will be a dose of colder, more unsettled weather—with some snow even possible in places.

The Meteorological Institute is forecasting spring-like conditions for the next week—with a sting in the tail come the weekend. Sunny and warmer-than average weather is forecast up until the end of the week, thanks to high pressure over Finland.

"High pressure, which has been causing the last few days of sunshine, will be in control for the start of the week," said Meteorological Institute meteorologist Eerik Saarikalle. "Then it will move away to the south-east."

Colder, wetter and more unsettled weather will then move in from the north, according to Saarikalle. Some of this precipitation could fall as sleet or snow, even in the far south.

Current forecasts suggest that the weather will turn colder on Saturday, and start to warm up again on the following Tuesday.

Saarikalle says, however, that the precise timing of the cold snap is uncertain—and that it could even linger over Finland for a while.
