The programme is part of a European-wide traffic police programme that will involve 22 countries on Thursday. The idea comes from the German Blitzmarathon model in which 93,000 drivers were ticketed for speeding during a 24-hour period throughout Germany last September.

For the Finnish police, the goal of the operation is to raise public awareness, as speeding is a factor in one third of road accident fatalities.

“We want people behind the wheel to think about what they’re doing. We hope that they will also think beyond whether or not they are fined for speeding and consider why there is a speed limit in place,” says police inspector Pasi Kemppainen from the National Police Board.

The police will be notifying the public in via Twitter about which intersections will have speed monitoring cameras.

As with the German model, the Finnish police would like everyone to be well informed ahead of time about Thursday’s speed camera marathon.
